Program Description


Project goal: To contribute to the well being of the Taita ecosystem functioning through conservation and the improvement of the community’s livelihood.

Project purpose: To promote and link biodiversity based enterprises for livelihood improvement and ecosystem conservation through equitable distribution of derived benefits.

Project objectives:

1. To strengthen local community’s institutional governance structure and capacities for effective management and sustainable utilisation of Taita ecosystem


  • Facilitate capacity building needs for the organization and the local CSOs dealing with nature based activities - 3 groups each consisting of 40 representatives.
  • Stakeholders’ mobilisation for project Launch and handing over.
  • Educate and create awareness in environmental conservation and nature based activities for disadvantaged groups in the Taita ecosystem.
  • Facilitate the undertaking of a needs assessment to determine and agree on emerging capacity needs of local environmental institutions in the ecosystem.
  • Organise 1 consensus Workshops for setting up institutional framework for equitable benefit sharing among the communities - 150 representatives.
  • Organise 3 exchange visits to successful biodiversity areas in Malindi, Laikipia and Kakamega.
  • Offer 3 trainings focussing on training of trainers (TOT) for extension services in resource management and product development.
  • Organise and facilitate the Making of a visual documentary on the lessons learnt from this exercise and disseminate the same information to the interested stakeholders.

2. To support, develop and link nature based derived enterprises from Taita ecosystem to livelihoods and biodiversity conservation.


  • Establishment of a Nature Based Enterprise Association comprising of the existing local CBOs, CSOs and Trustees within the Taita ecosystem.
  • Strengthen and Creation of NBEs within the ecosystem.
  • Establishment and registering of NB products within the ecosystem. This will focus both the high lands and the lowlands- Aloe, baobab, Moringa, oleogum resins and other nature accepted products.
  • Train 10 CBOs/CSOs in harvesting and post harvest handling on the established products.
  • Develop Marketing and market access through linkage to private enterprises.
  • Undertake the organisation and facilitation of the promotion of products and the launch.
  • Undertake business plan development for long term growth and sustainability   of the enterprise through a consultant.
  • Facilitate quality assurance enterprises are in place and that quality assurance indicators and procedures are set for the NB products.
  • Facilitate putting in place certification process and procedures for sustainable utilisation of the nature based products.
  • Facilitate the establishment of quantities and quality of the raw materials availability through resource mapping within the ecosystem.
  • Facilitate putting in place ownership structures in the formation of common groups within the ecosystem (formation and registration etc.).
  • Strengthen networking and collaboration of existing initiatives towards biodiversity initiatives in the ecosystem( LUMO, TTWTF, CFAs, KWS, KFS, NEMA, GoK, etc)

3. To enhance environmental protection and biodiversity conservation through rehabilitation and afforestation programs for degraded areas, improved utilisation of woody biomass energy and provision of alternative energy sources.


  • Catchment areas and degradation mapping assessment. ( identifying critical areas for intervention)
  • Protection and the rehabilitation of degraded critical sites above after mapping through strengthening and operationalisation of forest association groups, environmental association groups and water association groups.
  • Facilitate acquisition of assorted seeds for both re-afforestation and provision of wood energy.
  • Facilitate of establishment of at least 10 tree nurseries through CBOs.
  • Advocate for rehabilitation policy and procedures for the degraded forests.
  • Train communities on efficient charcoal processing technologies.
  • Promote to the communities on use and production of energy saving devices e.g. solar, jikos.
