Initiatives / interventions

There are a number of interventions that have been tried.

  • - The KWS-CORE programme, targeting nature based enterprise development to ensure sustainable conservation and utilization of the natural resources.
  • - The formation of Taita-Taveta wildlife forum (TTWTF) as a meeting point of various resource owners for wildlife conservation, natural resource management and enterprise development mechanisms.
  • - One area of nature based enterprise development include promotion of Non-wood-forest-products eco-farming enterprise, through identification of potential - Non-wood–forest products including Aloe farming demonstration farms where TIO is involved in this intervention.
  • - Lumo initiative was started in the year 2001 and commissioned in 2005 by USAID. Lumo have an ecotourism lodge and also have a component on natural resource management.
  • - Cross border project – GEF funding through UNDP) – (1) creating of an enabling environment for both Government and Communities to work together on environmental resources. (2) Balance the supply and demand on factors that impact on biodiversity conservation and wise use.
  • - Formation of community forest associations. About 3 forest associations have so far been formed but their impact is yet to be felt. Many more need to be formed and strengthened.

This project aims at addressing the problems highlighted above through the following;

- The project will facilitate comprehensive institutional strengthening programs for community owned and/or managed nature based enterprises (NBE’s).

- The project will address weakness of community based NBE’s through facilitating establishment of commercially viable business models within which business development services are integrated.

- This project will facilitate governance structures within community bodies/institutions to strengthen their negotiation capacities.

- The project will link Private sector participation where local communities will be facilitated in drafting business agreements with the private sector entrepreneurs.

- The project will facilitate entrepreneurship skills to the NBE institutions to enable them add value to their products.

- This project will link local NB enterprises to companies making processing plants like KIRDI, Mutaratara Co. in Kariobangi and others.

- Facilitate the community plant and promote indigenous vegetables and seedlings like Amaranths for food and for income generating.

In the lowlands, the introduction of crops/plants (aloe) not susceptible to animal raids will go along way in reducing human/wildlife conflict, reduced crop failure and increased or more reliable livelihood source.

- Facilitate Rehabilitation of the catchment areas (forests) through the replanting of forest areas by engaging the local community (organised groups and community forest associations)

- Promotion of non wood products for consumption and conservation (Aloe, Moringa, Amaranth, etc)

- Promotion of forest natural products for Market ( Baobab nuts, Tarmarine (Mukuanju) nuts, Resin, etc)

- Facilitation of Taita Taveta Nature Based products in the Kenya and international Market through Internet. Facilitation of the formation of water resource users associations (as per the Water Act 2002) that would help in the enforcement of the law

- Policy formulation on charcoal harvesting and management and  develop participatory natural resources management plans

- Establishment of wood lots for fuel wood and charcoal

- Promotion of energy saving technologies

- Advocacy and Facilitation of Development of cottage industries within Taita Taveta Ecosystem for Nature based products which include processing of aloe products, bee keeping, fish farming, basketry, gemstone mining, carvings, mineral water harvesting and Wild silkworm farming among others.

- Advocacy and facilitation on the Introduction and formation of enterprises such as eco-tourism and sanctuaries that will ensure the maintenance of large areas:  this will help avoid subdivision (of ranches) into small land units thus maintaining wildlife corridors.
